This coin marks the debut of this new series from the Royal Australian Mint. The Royal Australian Mint plans on this to be an annual series featuring a 1 oz BU silver coin, a 1 oz BU gold coin, and a 1 oz proof silver coin. This coin marks the first koala to be produced on a coin from this mint, as well as the last time they’ll use the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
The obverse side of the 2024 Royal Australian Mint Silver Koala Coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Notably, this first release in the overall series marks the final time the Royal Australian Mint will use Her Majesty’s effigy. Identifying marks of the coin surround the image.
The reverse field of the 2024 1 oz Silver Koala Coin showcases a unique koala image. The koala is seen looking to its left, amidst a forest background.

Description
The Obverse
The obverse shows a koala climbing and gripping a beam. Under its hind paws, you can see the inscription “1 oz .999 Ag,” with “Ag” being the Latin abbreviation for “argentum,” meaning “silver.” The koala is depicted in a naturalistic manner, turning its head back. In the background, there is a eucalyptus forest, the exclusive food source for these animals. Above the koala’s back, “KOALA” is written in large letters.
The Reverse
The reverse features, as a final tribute, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing her distinctive pearl necklace, designed by artist Jody Clark. His initials “JC” can be found on the left shoulder of the portrait. Unlike the portraits of her son, King Charles III, this one faces to the right. The image is surrounded by the inscription “ELIZABETH II 1952-2022” (the years of her reign), “AUSTRALIA 2024,” and the denomination “5 DOLLARS.”
