Why invest in this beautiful coin?

For the craftsmanship

Made with the highest care and consideration, the Silver proof coin made by the Royal Mint features a sharpness of detail like no other. The dies used to strike the coin are hand-finished to ensure all imperfections are removed. Blanks are fe into the coin press by hand before being struck up to six times to preserve the finer details of the design

For the amazing character that is Merlin

This coin part of the Myths & Legends series is the second coin of the series and pays tribute to the famous Wizard Merlin. Merlin is in the centre of the legend of King Arthur and has a special place in people’s hearts. The series aims to immortalise the characters and stories that have been passed on through generations celebrating British folklore and literature.

For the design on the reverse

Merlin is presented here in great detail by David Lawrence, the illustrator responsible for the design. Here Merlin is depicted with an owl on his shoulder which represents the sorcerer’s wisdom. At his belt is a golden sickle for cutting mistletoe in the sacred grove and he holds a magic stave. Glastonbury appears in the background, which is said to be the inspiration for the mystical isle of Avalon. The attention to details is remarkable from the face of the owl to the details of Merlin’s beard. Intricate Celtic knot patterns frame the design, reflecting the mystical atmosphere of the Arthurian legends. Inscriptions include “MERLIN . 1 OZ . FINE SILVER . 999 . 2023.”

For the first official portrait of King Charles III

Following the death of his mother Elizabeth II in September 2022, Charles became King Charles III. The portrait has been created by Martin Jennings who works in the figurative tradition in bronze and stone, and has created some amazing statues including the one of John Betjeman at St Pancras station in London. He was chosen in a private competition held by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee.

Jennings’ Royal portrait shows Charles facing left, the opposite direction to his mother who looks right on her coins. The tradition for British monarchs to face a different direction to their predecessor dates back to the seventeenth century. As with previous British Kings, and unlike Queen Elizabeth II, he wears no crown. The portrait was designed to give an accessible look to the King and the same is true of the inscription. Indeed the English form of the King’s name “Charles” has been chosen for the legends on the coins rather than the Latin “Carolus”. Around Charles head is written CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D •2 POUNDS 2023.

This beautiful coin contains 1 troy ounce (31.1035 g) of the precious metal and weighs 31.21 g. Celebrating British mythology, it is a must-have in your collection.
