Leonidas was the King of Spart, a city-state at the centre of Ancient Greece. The Spartan Army was highly regarded as the most effective fighting force in the ancient world. Despite inferior numbers compared to many opponents, the highly-trained and skilled Spartans often emerged victoriously.

On the obverse of the 1 oz Molon Labe Silver Round, you’ll find the defiance of the Spartans on display in a stunning design. As dozens of Persian soldiers lay dead at his feet, this Spartan warrior kneels as he hoists his shield high to protect himself from an onslaught of arrows coming from the Persians.

Leonidas and his forces, numbering 300 Spartans supported by other Greeks, held an area known as the Hot Gates. A natural choke point, his forces delayed the Persian Army’s advance and showed incredible determination. As one of his men complained about the Persians unleashing a volley of arrows that would block out the sun, Leonidas famously responded: “won’t it be nice, then, that we shall have shade in which to fight them.”

The reverse of Molon Labe Silver Round Type III issues is the Intaglio Mint logo at the centre of the design field. It is surrounded immediately by a field with sunburst rays. The outer edge has a stippled border with inscriptions of the round’s weight, purity, and metal content.
