In 2015, programmer and co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine, Vitalik Buterin, launched Ethereum. His vision was to differentiate the cryptocurrency from Bitcoin in that it could support decentralized applications. The currency quickly rose in popularity and is currently regarded as the second most popular cryptocurrency behind Bitcoin.

In addition to its use as a form of payment, the vision of Buterin came to fruition as Ethereum is vital in the development of many decentralized applications, used as the underlying blockchain to support NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, online games, and many more uses.
