Description
The spotted hyena is a strong and intelligent predator belonging to the hyena family, inhabiting the vast savannas, plains and semi-deserts of Africa. Its fur is covered with numerous irregular spots, which provide excellent camouflage in the tall grass. These hyenas form complex communities with a clear hierarchy with the female at the head. Contrary to popular belief, they are not mere scavengers – they obtain most of their food during successful hunts, acting together as a group. Their voice, which resembles human laughter, is used to communicate and convey information within the clan. Through their role in nature, they contribute to the cleanliness of the environment and balance in African ungulate populations.
The reverse of the coin depicts an adult hyena watching over two cubs, symbolizing strength, care and family bonding in the wild. The background in the form of the African continent emphasizes the origin of the animal and the theme of the entire “African Ounce” series. The edge of the composition shows information about the year of issue, the weight of the silver and its sample, which confirms the coin’s authenticity and numismatic value. The whole coin is characterized by precise engraving and artistic workmanship, which captures the natural beauty of African fauna. The obverse is traditionally adorned with the coat of arms of the Republic of Rwanda, and below it is the denomination – 50 Rwandan francs, which is the official proof of the state issue.
