Description
The Rolling calf is a mythical creature from Caribbean folklore, specifically from Jamaica. It is believed to be a malevolent spirit that takes the form of a large, black bull with burning eyes and chains around its neck. According to legend, the rolling calf roams the countryside at night, looking for unsuspecting victims to attack. It moves with a rolling step, hence its name, and its heavy chains can be heard clanking as it moves. The rolling calf is said to be the spirit of an evil person who has died and returned to torment the living. It is also believed that it can change its shape, appearing as different animals to deceive its victims.
The reverse of the coin depicts the titular Rolling Calf. What catches the eye is the shiny chain connecting the nose ring to the horns. The name of the cryptid is placed at the top, and its image is made in color. The obverse shows the coat of arms of the island state of Niue, which issued the coin. The upper part shows the denomination, while the lower part shows the year of issue.
