To combat counterfeiting, the Germania Mint has a series of security features. Authenticity starts with the fact that the mint only uses LBMA certified .9999 fine silver. Then they put a unique identification number on each bar. The back of the bar has a hologram with a number embedded in it. When you combine the ID number from the front of the bar and combine it with the number in the hologram, you then have a number that the mint can look up in their database to verify its authenticity. This makes for a kind of two-factor authentication.
