Since then, additional states—Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, South Dakota, Florida, and Oklahoma—have each launched their own Goldbacks in subsequent years, with Arizona recently becoming the sixth state to adopt this unique form of currency.Currency Highlights:

About Arizona Two Goldback
Set within the immense walls of the Grand Canyon, this artwork honors one of the most daring chapters in Arizona’s history: the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition. Led by Major John Wesley Powell, this was the first documented journey through the canyon by boat. At its heart is the virtue Exploratio (Exploration)—the noble pursuit of discovery in the face of the unknown.
In the foreground, a striking young woman embodies the spirit of exploration itself. Windswept and resolute, she rows a rugged wooden craft through the churning waters of the Colorado River. Her boat is modeled after those used in Powell’s expedition—the Emma Dean, Maid of the Canyon, Kitty Clyde’s Sister, and No Name. Amid perilous rapids and dwindling supplies, Powell’s crew endured nearly three months of hardship as they charted the Green and Colorado Rivers, documenting terrain that had remained a blank space on U.S. maps. Their expedition produced the first detailed records of the Grand Canyon, opening the nation’s eyes to one of Arizona’s greatest natural wonders.
In the background, Major Powell is depicted seated in his boat, his right sleeve pinned at the shoulder—a solemn reminder of the arm he lost at the Battle of Shiloh. As a veteran turned scientist, he led his men with vision, courage, and faith in the pursuit of knowledge.
Above, two California condors soar gracefully overhead, while a bighorn sheep stands on a rocky ledge, symbolizing Arizona’s rugged wildlife. Towering canyon walls glow in golden morning light as the rapids at Granite Falls churn below, creating a powerful sense of motion and grandeur.
This design celebrates the enduring spirit of discovery that defines Arizona. The Grand Canyon stands as both setting and symbol—forever linked to the expedition that revealed its majesty to the world. Etched along the bottom of the note is the scripture: “Let us not grow weary.” — Galatians 6:9
Goldbacks
The Goldback® is a revolutionary form of currency crafted from 24-karat gold, offering a reliable alternative as the American dollar continues to lose value. Each Goldback is designed to preserve purchasing power over time, addressing the age-old “small coin problem” by allowing people to make everyday transactions with real gold. While inflation erodes the value of paper currency, the Goldback’s intrinsic gold content ensures that it will hold its worth.
Recognized as legal tender in states like Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Florida, and Oklahoma, Goldbacks can be traded or bartered like other non-current forms of currency worldwide. This currency blends gold’s enduring value with modern craftsmanship, providing a versatile and practical means of exchange that won’t depreciate, making it a sound choice for those seeking stability in their everyday spending.
