Description
The obverse of the coin shows the bare (uncrowned) head of King Charles III facing left.
In tiny letters on the neck truncation, the artist’s initials:Â GDÂ (for Glyn Davies).
Around, the monarch’s legend followed by the face value and date of issue: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · FALKLAND ISLANDS · £5 · 2025 ·. Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Falkland Islands.
The reverse design features the Royal Coat of Arms of England from the Stuart period. It is a shield which is quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters a smaller shield quartered itself, with the three passant guardant lions of England repeated twice and the fleur-de-lys of France also twice; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland. The reference to France reflects the English monarchs’ claim to the throne of France, which they never actually attained.
The shield is on a background representing the Stuart rose.
Flanked by two roses, around above the inscription RYAL, which was an early English monetary denomination.
Around below, · ISTUD ET EST MIRABILE ·, translated as “it is marvelous” from Latin, part of “This is the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes” – a quote from Psalm 118:23.
