Buying gold in the UK: the 2026 guide

Gold has been used to store wealth for thousands of years. In the UK it also has two rare tax advantages: no VAT on investment gold, and no Capital Gains Tax on UK legal-tender coins.

Why people buy gold

Central banks keep buying

Central banks have bought more than 1,000 tonnes of gold a year since 2022 as they diversify their reserves away from the US dollar and other currencies.

A safe haven in uncertain times

When markets fall, currencies weaken or geopolitical risks rise, buyers often turn to gold because it is not tied to any single government or company.

Supply grows slowly

New mine output adds only a small amount to the world’s gold each year, and it takes many years to open a new mine.

You hold it yourself

Physical gold coins are owned outright. They do not depend on a bank, a broker or an online platform to keep their value.

The UK’s best-known gold coins

Gold Sovereign

Struck by the Royal Mint since 1817, the Sovereign is 22-carat gold and contains 7.32 g of pure gold. Its small size makes it a flexible way to buy and sell gold in smaller amounts.

Gold Britannia

The Royal Mint’s one-ounce bullion coin in 999.9 fine gold. As UK legal tender, any profit when you sell is free from Capital Gains Tax.
