The Silver Maple Leaf is one of the most recognised bullion coins in the world. The Royal Canadian Mint has struck it every year since 1988. The coin is 99.99% pure silver, finer than most other bullion coins, which are usually 99.9%. Collectors and investors buy it because it’s pure, well made and easy to resell anywhere in the world.

Design
The reverse shows Walter Ott’s sugar maple leaf, Canada’s national symbol, over a background of precise radial lines. The obverse has Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the 2020 date and the $5 face value.

Security features
Since 2014 the Royal Canadian Mint has added security features that make the Silver Maple Leaf one of the hardest bullion coins to counterfeit:

• • Radial lines: fine lines machined into the background on both sides, which give the coin its typical light-diffracting shine.
  • Micro-engraved privy mark: a small laser-engraved maple leaf on the reverse. Under magnification it shows the numerals “20” for the year of issue.
  • MintShield™ surface protection: introduced in 2018, it greatly reduces the white “milk spots” that can form on silver coins.
