The short answer: to sell silver coins for a fair price, sell to a bullion dealer who prices them against the live silver spot price. Check today’s price, get a quote, post your coins by Royal Mail Special Delivery and get paid by bank transfer. We pay 5% over spot for popular 1 oz silver coins, and we pay the same day your coins arrive and have been checked.
Your options for selling silver coins
| Where to sell | Price | Speed | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bullion dealer | Set by the live spot price | A few days by post | How the price is set and when you’re paid |
| Online marketplace | Can be good, minus selling fees | Slow: you wait for a buyer | Fees, payment disputes, scams and posting to strangers |
| Cash-for-gold shop or pawnbroker | Often well below spot | Same day, in person | Low offers, especially for silver |
| Private sale | Varies | Varies | Meeting strangers and fake payments |
For common bullion coins, a dealer is usually the simplest choice: you know the price before you send anything, and there are no listing fees.
What decides the price you’re offered
- The silver spot price. This is the live market price of one troy ounce of silver, and it changes all day. You can follow it on our live charts page.
- Which coin it is. Well-known 1 oz bullion coins, such as the Britannia, Maple Leaf, Kangaroo, Krugerrand and Philharmonic, are the easiest to sell and get the best prices.
- Condition. Scratches, dents and heavy marks can lower the price. Proof and collector coins are valued differently from everyday bullion coins.
How to sell your silver coins by post, step by step
- Check today’s spot price so you know roughly what your coins are worth.
- List what you have: which coins, the years, how many, and their condition.
- Ask for a quote through our contact page.
- Agree the price. Once you accept our offer, the price is fixed, even if the silver price moves before your coins arrive.
- Pack your coins carefully. Keep them in their capsules or tubes, pack them so they can’t move or rattle, and use a plain box with no hint of what’s inside.
- Post them by Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed, with cover for their full value. Royal Mail treats bullion as valuables and covers up to £2,500 per parcel, so split bigger sales into several parcels. Keep your proof of postage.
- Get paid. We check your coins when they arrive and pay you by bank transfer the same day.
Worked example
You sell 20 one-ounce Silver Britannias when the silver spot price is £45.00 an ounce. At 5% over spot, we pay £47.25 per coin.
20 × £47.25 = £945.00
That fits in one Special Delivery parcel, well within Royal Mail’s £2,500 limit.
Tips to get the best price
- Don’t clean your coins. Cleaning leaves fine scratches that can lower the price.
- Keep original tubes, capsules and certificates. They show the coins have been looked after.
- Compare the price per coin, not just a headline percentage, and check whether any fees or postage costs are taken off.
- Watch the spot price. Silver can move several percent in a week, so check it on the day you agree a sale.
Do you pay tax when you sell silver coins?
Silver Britannias are UK legal tender, so gains on them are free from Capital Gains Tax. Gains on foreign coins, such as Maple Leafs or Krugerrands, can be taxable once your total gains for the year go over the £3,000 allowance. Our guide Are Silver Britannias CGT-free? explains how it works.
